Artist Statement
‘Conveyed through colour and form, the images are a representation of transformation.”
Penny Stutterheime
Biography & Work
Making use of the impasto application of oil paint Stutterheime presents haptic images that are symbolic and layered. With a fluid subject matter that has evolved through landscape, portraiture and still life to an abstract and esoteric form, these paintings serve as metaphors for the transformative processes that unfold in the body and psyche.
Stutterheime responds intuitively to surroundings with an intention to primarily convey internal landscapes rather than any particular reality. The result is both deeply familiar and yet mysteriously transformative.- A process that unfolds in the body and psyche. Referring to the experiential quality in the paintings the aim is to lead both the artist & viewer to the possibility of moving through different states of consciousness.
Colour is a medium of its own in Stutterheime's works. Vivacious colours afford glimpses into further aspects of consciousness, elegantly ebbing and presenting a conduit for the flow between inner & outer awareness. Stutterheime was born in 1958 in Cape Town, South Africa. She is largely self-taught and has consistently participated in various solo group exhibitions over the last 28 years. Her paintings are included in various private and corporate collections both locally and internationally.
