Jaycene-Fay Ravenscroft
(Born 1994, Cape Town, South Africa)
Jaycene-Fay Ravenscroft is a painter and photographer living in South Africa. In 2022, she earned a BA degree in Art History and Ancient History at the University of South Africa while working full-time in the art world. She has also written art history and poetry articles for various online magazines worldwide and in print.
Ravenscroft’s deep love for nature is reflected in her botanical subject matter, but these are not your usual pretty bouquets or whimsical gardens. Her compositions often contain something unusual, such as dying flowers on a mattress, a cactus standing next to a brassiere hanging on a washing line, a dangerous Venus Flytrap, or poisonous flowers. Her work feels graphic and sensual. Light and shadow are important elements, too. For Ravenscroft, shadows symbolise not only the darker parts of our human nature but also the powerful parts, such as emotion, intuition, sensuality, and the feminine. There is no light without shadow.
